Lagos driver docked for allegedly killing pedestrian

The police in Lagos on Thursday brought a 38- year-old driver, Tosin Awosanya, before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian and causing her death.

The defendant, who resides at No.13 Busare St., off AIT Road, Alagbado, Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving, causing the death of a pedestrian and driving without licence.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem told the court that the offences were committed on Nov. 13, 2023, at Ajala Bus Stop, Abule Egba Road, Lagos.

Akeem alleged that the defendant drove in a reckless manner and knocked down a pedestrian, one Gloria Eberechukwu, 55, and she died instantly.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravened Sections 51, 52 and 111 of the Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2018.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Osunsanmi adjourned the case until Feb. 5 for mention.
