For students, parents and members of staff of Silver Springs Schools,
Ikotun, Lagos, celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage is not
only necessary, but of utmost priority. This is what informed the
celebration of Cultural Day (Ancient & Modern Day) in the school,
where everybody was dressed in gorgeous indigenous cultural attires.
Various songs were rendered in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and other local
languages.

The Principal of Silver Springs Schools, Mrs. Oluranti Daramola, explained
the essence of the cultural day in the lives of the students, saying,
“We teach the students the spirit of unity and love. The cultural day
also help in making the students appreciate the fact that though we
live in a contemporary society, our cultural heritage is still dear to us.

We try to imbibe in them that spirit of unity for the students to work
together and live together, and we believe if this is extended to the
home and community, our country will be a better place to live.”

With the theme ‘Ancient and Modern Trends in Education, a Tool for
Unity in Diversity,’ she further stated that Nigeria’s culture is
gradually fading away, though not dying and that is why “we are
encouraging everybody to dress traditionally. Schools and churches
should also encourage cultural day celebration and teach the children
the importance of culture from the cradle.
