A $16.9 million scandal is rocking the Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami(SAN).
The said sum, approximately N6bn, was a piece of a $321 million of Abacha loot recovered by the federal government.
Malami, according to The Cable, an online news medium, and the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, are having a muted disagreement over the money as the latter ignored his request to approve the payment of $16.9 million fees to two lawyers he hired for the recovery of the said Abacha loot.
Instead, Adeosun reportedly wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, raising objections to the payment.
The paper had in a previous report, suggested that Malami’s request smacked of corruption.
It alleged the Justice Minister of plotting to defraud the federal government as the money was recovered during the time of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 when Mohammed Bello Adoke was Attorney-General of the Federation.
It added that Enrico Monfrini, a Swiss lawyer, hired by the Federal Government since 1999 to work on recovering Abacha loot, had been paid for the same job.
