The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said on Friday that it has postponed the Enugu East Senatorial District Election earlier scheduled to hold alongside the presidential and other National Assembly polls nationwide on Saturday.

Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu announced the postponement of the election at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.

The election which was postponed because of the murder of Oyibo Chukwu, the candidate of Labour Party for the senatorial district will now hold on March 11 alongside the governorship and states Houses of Assembly elections, according to the INEC Chairman.

Chukwu was killed on Wednesday evening alongside five supporters who were inside his vehicle.

INEC said campaign in the senatorial district can continue until 24 hours before the rescheduled date for the election.

“I expect the party to conduct primaries as early as next week,” he said.

“The campaign that ended last night was for presidential and national assembly elections and not for the states and houses of assembly elections.

Enugu State Chairman of LP, Mr Casmir Agbo had earlier on Friday told journalists that the party had notified INEC about the death of Chukwu.

He said: “I have been in touch with the State Resident Electoral Commission (REC); he advised me on what to do which I did.

“We wrote to INEC through our national office and the commission, in line with sections (31) and (34l of the Electoral Act.

Agbo described the death of Chukwu as tragic and unfortunate and condemnable by any well-meaning person who value human life.

He called on relevant security agencies to thoroughly investigate the death of the LP candidate and other politically motivated murder in the state.

“I have informed all security operatives in the state – the Army, the Police, the DSS and Civil Defence,” he said.

According to him, the death of Chukwu would be a turning point in the victory of the labour party in Enugu State.

He called on party members not to despair but remain strong and hopeful in the “struggle to reclaim Enugu State.
