Governors yesterday threw their weight behind the condition set by President Muhammadu Buhari for the release of the Paris Club refund.
The governors made their position known at the end of yesterday’s National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by the Vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, had on Wednesday said the release of the Paris Club refund was being delayed because of the condition attached to it release by President Buhari.
The condition, according to the Minister was that the money should be used in offsetting outstanding salaries being owed by the state governments.
Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, told State House Correspondents at the end of the NEC meeting that the President was right in attaching the condition to the release of the fund.
The Governor said the issue of the national minimum wage was not discussed at the meeting but that they are fully involved in the ongoing negotiations.
“We are represented by six governors in the committee, it’s a work in progress and am sure we will get to the promised land,” he said.
Governors who attended the NEC meeting are Dr. kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (Kano) Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Samuel Orton (Benue), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi) and Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Yahaya Bello (Kogi) and Nasiru El- Rufai (Kaduna).
