WAFCON 2025: Determined Super Falcons lock horns with Botswana in title chase

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are aiming for another victory today as they face Botswana in Casablanca, in their second group match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

A win would secure an early place in the quarterfinals for the nine-time champions.

The Falcons made a strong start to their campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Tunisia.

Nigeria previously defeated Botswana during the 2022 edition of the tournament, also hosted in Morocco.

In that match, goals from Ifeoma Onumonu and Christy Ucheibe sealed a 2-0 win.

Coach Justine Madugu is expected to field a dynamic lineup again today. Esther Okoronkwo, Jennifer Echegini, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo are all expected to feature prominently, supported by experienced players such as captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Asisat Oshoala, and Toni Payne.

The midfield could see a strong combination of Christy Ucheibe, Halimatu Ayinde, and Jennifer Echegini, offering support to the forwards. In defense, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie will anchor the backline, with Osinachi Ohale providing leadership to Tosin Demehin, Michelle Alozie, and Ashley Plumptre.

Botswana enters the match after a narrow 1-0 loss to Algeria in their opening game. Nigeria, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their strong start and move one step closer to their goal of claiming a 10th WAFCON title.

“As I said before the tournament began, we remain focused on our Mission X. We believe victory over Botswana is a strong possibility, but we’re taking it one game at a time and not underestimating any opponent,” Coach Madugu said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Nigerian time at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
