Supreme Court removes Julius Abure as Labour Party chairman

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court in a unanimous judgement on Friday, sacked Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party.

The apex court held that the Appeal Court whose judgement validated the position of Abure as the Labour Party chairman, lacked jurisdiction as the matter of leadership conflict was substantially an internal matter of the party.

The Supreme Court said courts cannot adjudicate over internal affairs of a political party.

The apex court said the facts before it showed that Abure’s tenure as the Labour Party chairman had expired. It then dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the Labour Party.

The panel also held that the appeal filed by Senator Esther Usman was allowed as it was meritorious.
