Sanwo-Olu swears in LASIEC team, promises transparent elections

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, inaugurated the Chairman and members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), urging them to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

Speaking during the ceremony at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, the Governor emphasised the importance of credible elections as the cornerstone of sustainable development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to democracy, accountability, and the rule of law, stating, “Credible elections are the bedrock of sustainable development, and we will continue to support LASIEC in fulfilling its mandate.”

The newly appointed LASIEC team, chaired by Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile, includes Mr. Samson Ajibade, Mr. Akin Durojaiye Oluwo, Dr. Olumide Olusola Metilelu, Mr. Abeeb Dapo Aileru, and Hon. Oladele Adekanye.

They are tasked with coordinating the forthcoming local government elections across Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu charged the team to prioritise transparency, fairness, and impartiality, stating, “Your actions must reflect the highest standards of integrity and accountability. Leverage technology, such as biometric voter registration and online platforms, to enhance accuracy, prevent fraud, and improve voter education.”

He also stressed the need for robust collaboration with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and the media, to ensure transparent and credible elections.

The Governor also swore in three Permanent Secretaries: Mr. Abdul Rafiu Omowole Fashola, Mrs. Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, and Mr. Abdul-Rasheed Abiola Muri-Okunola.

He tasked them with upholding professionalism, fostering innovation, and driving the effective implementation of government policies under the THEMES+ agenda.

Sanwo-Olu said, “As role models for the public service, your conduct must reflect the values of integrity, transparency, and accountability that this government upholds. Be creative and proactive in your approach to governance.”

Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, highlighted the timeliness of the LASIEC appointments, noting their significance ahead of the local government elections in the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

He commended the appointments as a step towards reinvigorating the state’s public service.

Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile, speaking on behalf of LASIEC members, and Mr. Abdul Rafiu Fashola, representing the Permanent Secretaries, pledged their commitment to their respective roles.

They vowed to ensure transparent elections and to contribute towards the realisation of the THEMES+ agenda.
