Nigerians hail, knock Davido’s ‘King of Nigeria’ comment

Social media was abuzz after Nigerian singer and record producer, David Adeleke, also known as Davido, proclaimed himself as the King of Nigeria following a meeting with a young man who described himself as the Prince of Saudi Arabia in Paris.

Recall that in a recent video posted on social media on September 5, 2024, Davido was spotted in the streets of Paris.

In the clip, Davido introduced himself as the “King of Nigeria” while exchanging pleasantries and taking photos with the prince.

The declaration, however, stirred mixed reactions online, with fans and critics offering their opinions. Some supported the Afrobeats star, agreeing that he had earned the title, while others saw it as unnecessary bragging.

One user, Gozie, commented, “He’s earned it. He can go ahead.”

However, another user Whizkid FC responded, “Brag over nothing,” suggesting that Davido’s statement was uncalled for.

Further criticism came from Big BOJ, who mocked the idea that Davido is part of the “big three” in Nigerian music.

Another user, Lirah Back, bluntly said, “You wey no get talent,” while El Kopik remarked, “Anyone who calls himself a king is not a true king.”

Despite the backlash, some fans defended Davido’s confidence. A user named Rossie argued, “He’s the biggest artist in Africa, so it’s understandable.”

Also a Facebook user, Ayochukwu Emmanuel said, “This one don pain Una abi,,,i can see pain going straight to some of Una,,,,,,But no doubt Davido is King weather Una like it or not….U get the point now.

Another Facebook, Em My said, “Na you get ur mouth you fit call urself king while you are not big Wiz 🦅❤️ remain the king of Nigeria.”

Even Senator Dino Melaye chimed in, labelling Davido as “001” in the Nigerian music industry and calling him the most globally recognised Nigerian artiste.

This isn’t the first time Davido has made bold claims. Earlier this year, the singer reflected on his journey, tweeting that since his debut, no one has had peace in the music industry, a statement he said he was proud of.

Last year, he also addressed naysayers, reminding them of his Grammy nomination and listing his accomplishments, despite facing mockery in the past.
