The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding the recall of Nivea Black and White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, following safety concerns raised by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (Rapex) authorities.
The affected product, which is marked as offering “48H Protection in African Climate,” has been identified with batch number 93529610 and bar code 42299882.
NAFDAC has reported that the roll-on contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a chemical that is prohibited in cosmetics due to its harmful effects on the reproductive system, potential risks to unborn children, and its capacity to cause skin irritation and burns.
In its alert, NAFDAC has urged all stakeholders, including importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers, to exercise caution and vigilance regarding the supply chain.
They are advised to refrain from the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the recalled deodorant to safeguard public health.
The product, manufactured in Germany, is part of the cosmetic category and is popular among consumers for its purported long-lasting protection.
NAFDAC’s alert highlights the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety of cosmetics and other consumer products in Nigeria.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled item are advised to return it to the point of sale or contact NAFDAC for guidance.
The agency is working closely with relevant authorities to address the issue and ensure the safety of products available in the Nigerian market.
