The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has said it will constitute a taskforce to help tackle the menace of street trading across the state.
Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (Rtd), LAGESC Corps Marshal, announced this during a periodic stakeholder engagement with Lagos Central Senatorial District stakeholders, aimed at seeking the buy-in and cooperation of all relevant stakeholders.
“We are going to constitute a taskforce for street trading to patrol every nooks and crannies of the state,” he said.
Cole made it clear that street trading and hawking remain banned according to the state’s environmental laws.
Cole emphasized that the voice of stakeholders must be heard, adding that there is a need to agree on the common goal for the total eradication of environmental nuisance.
“Environmental sanitation retains great importance due to its indispensable role played in our daily communal living and livelihood,” he explained.
He also noted that the responsibility for maintaining a clean environment is not only in the hands of the government.
“While we strive for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos, it is requisite to highlight that the responsibility is not only in the hands of government agencies but also incumbent on every one of us,” Cole said.
Cole also mentioned that his operatives had been able to carry out enforcement operations and conduct a clean-up of all pedestrian bridges in the state.
Additionally, he said that his operatives had made numerous arrests and secured the prosecution of miscreants who converted pedestrian bridges to lay siege on unsuspecting pedestrians, which discouraged the use of the bridges for safety.
“We have stepped up daily enforcement operations to reduce the spate of street trading to erring traders and hawkers in the habit of displaying wares for sale in traffic, lay-bys, setbacks, medians, road verges, and kerbs,” he said.
He further urged residents to report unwholesome waste-related issues and perpetrators alike for the good of the environment.
