Lagos gas explosion destroys 20 shops

Twenty shops were completely burnt in a gas explosion that occurred at Agbado road, Olusesi bus stop, Iju Ishaga, Lagos.

The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the development on Wednesday.

He noted that the explosion occurred after a shop dealing with Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), at the aforementioned address, was gutted by fire.

Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a leakage from one of the gas cylinders being off-loaded from a delivery truck, which was said to have ignited immediately, erupting into an inferno that spread to the adjoining building (shops).

No loss of life but goods worth fortunes were lost to the incident.

The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, also confirmed that the fire incident was caused by six 75-50 (kg) gas cylinders being unloaded from a mini truck at a gas station in the aforementioned area.

Adeseye said: “The cause of the emergency is attributed to the off-loading of six numbers of 75-50(kg) gas cylinders sizes from a stationed mini truck to a gas shop that accidentally resulted in explosion from one of the compromised head cap of a cylinder accompanied by fire.

“The ensuing fire triggered to the other side of the street with the aid of one of the gas cylinders that travelled over, affecting 18 shops in all and contents therein with the mini truck.”
