Everton star, Alex Iwobi says he believes that the Super Eagles can become African champions for the fourth time in history in 2024 because the team oozes sheer quality in every department on the pitch.

The Super Eagles coach, José Peseiro has repeatedly said that his plan is to win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast next year. Iwobi was asked if he genuinely thinks that Nigeria can win the trophy.

That is considering what Morrocco did at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, what Senegal have been doing, they have been the best team at all levels of football in Africa for some years now.

Also, taking a good look at Ghana, they are trying to build their football once again. Does Iwobi genuinely think Nigeria can go ahead to win the 2024 AFCON which is just about six months away?

“Of course, you all know the sort of players we have, the quality we have and then, we are still young and when you are in a tournament, you need to have the belief that you can go all the way to win.”

“And I am very sure that if we have that mindset, we can go all the way in Ivory Coast next year and try to do something great for our country,” the versatile Everton player said.

Nigeria on Sunday qualified for the 34th edition of the AFCON taking place in Ivory Coast from 13th January – 11th February, 2024 after defeating Sierra Leone 3-2 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia.

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen scored twice but Sierra Leone managed to equalise before Kelechi Iheanacho scored in the 95th minute to guarantee maximum points and qualification with a match to spare.

Also last season under former Everton manager, Frank Lampard, Iwobi played in a lot of positions. He was asked if he was pleased with that or if he prefers to maybe roam in the midfield.

He was also asked what is favorite position on the pitch is as there has been debate about that. “My favorite position on the pitch is playing inside the midfield.

“But of course with different managers, they require different jobs and all my life, I have had to adapt to playing many positions, so I am not really fazed.

“I have had to learn and growing up in the Arsenal academy and playing in various positions but then, my favorite position on the pitch is the number eight (8).”
