Retired Nigerian basketball player Ugo Udeze has backed D’Tigers and D’Tigress to win medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, saying anything short “will be a surprise.”
Udezue left his lucrative job as an NBA agent to found AFA Sports, a Nigerian company engaged in the design, manufacturing and sales of athletic and leisure footwear, apparel and accessories, which is the official apparel of Team Nigeria at the Games.
The men’s team, ranked 22 in the world, has been electrifying in the last few days, beating world and Olympic champions USA and world No.4 Argentina in pre-Olympic friendlies he is convinced that with the quality of players in Mike Brown’s side, they were capable of holding their own against the best in Tokyo.
The former Nigeria international is also optimistic the women’s national team, current African champions have what it takes to go all the way at the Games.
This is the first time we are having a world-coach, and they have a great squad, both the men and women’s team are good,” Udezue said in Lagos on Wednesday.
“They (players) are very fresh, young and very athletic. They are determined and I’ll be surprised if they don’t win medals.”
