President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the killing of a Brigadier-General and 3 soldiers by terrorists of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province on Saturday in Borno State.
Brigadier-General Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers were reportedly killed while providing reinforcement after ISWAP ambushed Nigerian troops in Askira Uba Local Government Area of the state.
“I am extremely saddened to hear of the demise of Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice, in a very rare display of gallantry, as they tried to help their compatriots in the war against terrorists.
“Nigeria has lost brave soldiers. I salute their courage. May their souls Rest In Peace. General Zirkusu leaves us sad and devastated. The soldier in him will remain immortal.
“I have asked the Chief of Army Staff to accept my heartfelt condolences and that of the nation, and to convey same to the members of the families of those martyred,” Buhari said in a Facebook post.
The president further prayed to God to grant the bereaved families the fortitude to bear the loss.
While confirming the sad development earlier, the army said it had deployed “five A-Jet, two A-29, two Dragon combat” to the area to carry out offensive against the terrorists.
The army’s spokesperson, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, had said that several ISWAP members were killed in a “fierce encounter” with Nigerian troops.
