FIFA World Club Cup Final: Past meetings, results as Chelsea lock horns with PSG in historic ninth time

Chelsea will meet Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, marking a renewal of one of the most frequent rivalries in international club football.

This will be the ninth encounter between the two sides in official UEFA and FIFA competitions, but notably the first outside of Europe and the Champions League.

The fixture rekindles a series of high-stakes meetings, particularly from the mid-2010s, when Chelsea and PSG faced each other in three consecutive Champions League knockout rounds between 2014 and 2016.

Their first meeting came in the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League group stage, with Chelsea claiming a 3-0 victory in Paris thanks to two goals from Didier Drogba.

In the 2013/14 quarter-finals, PSG earned a 3-1 first-leg win at the Parc des Princes, but Chelsea overturned the deficit at Stamford Bridge with goals from André Schürrle and Demba Ba, advancing on away goals.

PSG responded in the 2014/15 round of 16. Despite playing much of the second leg with ten men after Zlatan Ibrahimović’s dismissal, the French side progressed after extra-time thanks to headers from David Luiz and Thiago Silva, overcoming Chelsea’s goals from Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard.

The rivalry continued in the 2015/16 season, with PSG winning both legs of the round of 16 by 2-1 margins, advancing 4-2 on aggregate.

Now, the two clubs will meet on a new stage, as they contest the FIFA Club World Cup final for the first time. PSG, led by Luis Enrique, will be playing in their first Club World Cup final.

The Spanish coach has previously faced English clubs seven times in UEFA competitions, recording five wins and two defeats.

The final presents an opportunity for both clubs to claim a prestigious global title and adds another chapter to a well-established rivalry, this time far beyond the borders of Europe.
