Eyewitness truck driver accuses police of cover-up in Diogo Jota’s crash death

A truck driver who witnessed the fatal crash that killed Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, has accused the Spanish police of twisting the facts.

According to Daily Mail, the driver, Jose Azevedo, who recorded the first video of the burning Lamborghini Huracan, insists the car was not speeding, contrary to what police investigators have claimed.

“I filmed it, I stopped, I tried to help, but there was nothing I could do,” Azevedo said in a video message. “But they were not speeding. I give the family my word.”

The official police report had suggested the £180,000 sports car was over-speeding before veering off the A-52 highway near Zamora, Spain, bursting into flames and killing the two brothers instantly. The vehicle was reportedly trying to overtake when a tyre blew out.

But Azevedo isn’t buying it.

“That road is a death trap. It’s dark, badly maintained, full of potholes. I drive it every day. It wasn’t the speed — it was the road,” he said.

The truck driver’s claim is gaining traction, especially as it comes just days after another woman, 60, nearly died in a separate crash on the same highway, just hours before Jota’s tragic accident.

The A-52 highway has now come under fire. Locals have repeatedly described it as a death stretch plagued by potholes, poor lighting, and dangerous terrain. In 2020 alone, nearly 15,000 speeding tickets were issued on that route.

Reports say over 40 complaints were made in one month last year about the potholes alone.

Jota, 28, and his brother were said to be heading to catch a ferry to the UK when the crash happened around 12:35am. The Liverpool forward had reportedly been advised not to fly due to recent lung surgery.

Despite the shocking deaths, Spanish authorities have not confirmed the exact speed the car was moving at, yet chose to suggest recklessness on Jota’s part.

Now, Azevedo’s eyewitness testimony has thrown up serious questions.

“Stop blaming the dead. Blame the road,” he added.
