Christian Chukwu, 1980 AFCON hero, ex-Super Eagles coach, is dead

Former Captain and head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Christian Chukwu has died at the age of 74 after a brief illness.

Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” etched his name into football folklore when he captained the then Green Eagles to Nigeria’s historic first African Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in 1980.

The legendary defender led the national team to a resounding 3-0 victory over Algeria in the final held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos — a moment that remainED one of the most cherished in the country’s sporting history.

News of his passing was confirmed on Saturday morning by his longtime friend and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami.

In an emotional tribute, Odegbami said: “I just received the news that between 9:00 and 10:00 this morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s history, has passed on.

“Babuje, Emmanuel Okala, MON, gave me the sad news a few minutes ago. May ‘Onyim’ find peace with our Creator in Heaven and console his family.”

Chukwu’s influence on Nigerian football transcended generations. After his glittering playing career, he took up coaching and returned to manage the Super Eagles between 2003 and 2005.

Under his leadership, Nigeria secured a third-place finish at the 2004 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.

Widely respected for his leadership both on and off the pitch, Chukwu was celebrated for his calm demeanour, tactical acumen, and unwavering dedication to the game.

His contributions to Nigerian football earned him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Beyond his national achievements, Chukwu also had a successful club career with Enugu Rangers, where he won multiple domestic titles and left an indelible mark as one of the club’s greatest players.

Christian Chukwu is survived by his wife, children, and a legacy that will inspire future generations of Nigerian footballers.
