The Heritage Bank office in Calabar, Cross Rivee State, was thrown into chaos on Wednesday morning, with customers threatening to break down the facility for fear of losing their deposits.
The entrance was blocked, which exacerbated their distress, The Nation reports.
Some customers, already in tears, reported receiving an anonymous notice about the bank’s licence being revoked, intensifying their fears.
At 10am, a bank official addressed the crowd, asking them to return home and promising that their funds would be transferred to other accounts linked to their Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) starting from Thursday, 6th June 2024.
The panic stemmed from the CBN’s decision on Monday to revoke Heritage Bank’s operational licence due to its failure to improve its financial status, causing widespread concern over the safety of customer deposits.
