No fewer than 14 teams will participate in this year’s Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), including two international female teams from Benin Republic.
The football fiesta which enters the fourth edition this year, will hold in Benin City, Edo State, from October 2 to 13, 2024.
The teams include: Edo Queens FC, Fortress Ladies FC, Rivers Angels FC, Nasarawa Amazons FC, Naija Ratel FC, Heartland Queens FC, FC Robo and Ekiti Queens FC.
Others are Delta Queens FC, Confluence Queens FC, Bayelsa Queens FC, Abia Angels FC, Espoir FC de Cotonou, Benin Republic and Aigle Royal d’Adjara – Benin Republic.
Wife of Edo State Governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, who disclosed this to journalists on Tuesday, said the pre-season tournament was her personal initiative in collaboration with private sector partners to groom and empower the girl-child.
She noted that the competition was geared to engender grassroots sports development in Edo State and Nigeria.
“Since its inception in 2020, the tournament has grown remarkably, making a significant impact by providing a platform for our young girls to dream big and pursue their passions.
“Beyond nurturing our local talent, the tournament has also helped position our female football players on the global stage; with many of the girls from the past editions representing Nigeria on the international stage with distinction,” she said.
The Edo First Lady disclosed N32.5 million prize for the Tournament, with the winner going home with the star prize of N10 million, while the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners up will get N7 million, N5 million and N3 million respectively.
Each of the remaining 10 participating teams will also get N75,000 consolation prizes.
