Sunday Adeyemo, the Yoruba youth activist known as Sunday Igboho, has declared his willingness to work with the federal government to address the country’s worsening security challenges.
Adeyemo made the pledge in a statement issued on Friday after his return to Nigeria following nearly five years outside the country.
He commended President Bola Tinubu alongside south-west governors and traditional rulers, describing their roles as pivotal to his homecoming.
The activist said he was prepared to support initiatives that would promote peace and socio-economic development, particularly across the south-west.
Adeyemo had lived outside Nigeria after the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, former president, declared him wanted over allegations bordering on illegal possession of arms.
His return last Monday attracted significant attention from supporters, community leaders and political stakeholders in the region.
Expressing appreciation to the president, Adeyemo described the pardon granted to him as instrumental to his decision to return.
“I deeply appreciate the mercy and magnanimity of our revered President Bola Tinubu, who graciously granted me freedom to return to Nigeria after intervention by stakeholders in the traditional institution,” he said.
Recalling past events, Adeyemo referenced the July 1, 2021 raid on his Ibadan residence by security operatives, which led to fatalities and multiple arrests.
“While I would not take this opportunity and freedom for granted, I am ready to collaborate with the federal government in tackling the ravaging insecurity and support measures aimed at enhancing peace and socioeconomic growth in the country, especially in the South West,” he said.
“It is also very germane to appreciate all the South West State governors, namely Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), for their critical support and enviable roles.
“While commending the South West governors, I want to single out Governor Seyi Makinde for his giant strides in the steady development of Oyo State.”
Adeyemo further recognised traditional rulers, including Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Olubadan of Ibadan, Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife, and Francis Olushola Alao, Olugbon of Orile Igbon.
