Tunisia have become the second African team to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 away on Monday.
Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane scored the winning goal in the 94th minute in Malabo. The result gave Tunisia 22 points from eight games. With two matches left, second-placed Namibia (12 points) cannot catch them.
This will be Tunisia’s seventh World Cup appearance and their third in a row. Coach Jalel Kadri’s team has been outstanding in defence, not conceding a single goal so far, with a record of 13 goals scored and none conceded.
Equatorial Guinea, who lost points earlier in the campaign due to forfeits, fought hard but could not stop Tunisia. Goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen was booked for time-wasting late on but helped his side hold firm. Equatorial Guinea are stuck on 10 points and, like Liberia and Malawi, must hope to finish well and rely on runner-up rankings to stay in the race. São Tomé and Príncipe remain bottom without a point.
In Group E, Morocco, who had already secured qualification in the last round, made it seven wins in seven matches with a 2-0 victory away to Zambia. Youssef En-Nesyri scored in the 7th minute, and Hamza Igamane added another early in the second half. Morocco now have 21 points and a strong goal record of 21 scored and only two conceded. Tanzania (10 points, 6 games) sit second, while Zambia and Niger (6 points each) still have hopes but little margin for error. Congo are bottom with one point.
In Group G, Mozambique kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Botswana. Witi scored after 6 minutes, and Feliciano “Bangal” Jone sealed the win in the 71st minute. Mozambique now have 15 points, three behind leaders Algeria (18 points) and three ahead of Uganda. Botswana remain on 9 points, while Guinea (10 points) also stay in contention.
With two international windows left, nine group winners will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup in North America. The four best runners-up will play in a CAF playoff, and the winner will then face teams from other continents for a possible tenth African slot.
Tunisia’s perfect defence and Morocco’s consistent form have set the standard for the rest of Africa in this qualifying campaign.
