Gov. Okpebholo floors Asue Ighodalo at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo and affirmed Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Governor of Edo State.

The appeal by Ighodalo challenged the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which announced Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of that election.

Ighodalo’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ken Mozia, asked the court to overturn the judgments of the lower courts, which had upheld INEC’s declaration of Okpebholo as winner.

However, the five-man panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal held that the appellants could not establish their claims of election non-compliance, unlawful votes, and that Monday Okpebholo was not duly elected.

The appeal was dismissed for lacking merit.
