The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday reiterated his administration’s commitment to fight drug abuse in the state.

The governor stated this at the inauguration of the Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse (LASKADA) in Agidingbi, Ikeja, adding that the menace of drug abuse was on the high side.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello, explained that the present administration was committed to a prosperous Lagos, adding that it was necessary for all Lagosians to be united in fighting the drug abuse monster which was capable of truncating the future of youths in the state.

He said, “The theme, ‘Lagos State Kicks Against Drug Abuse,’ is a reminder of the responsibilities of individuals, organisations and the society at large to rise up and safeguard the future of our youths.”

Ambode added that the establishment of youth-friendly centres in all the 57 councils was meant to serve as avenues for relaxation and to further engage youths in productive ventures in order to reduce the menace of drug abuse.

Earlier in her goodwill message,  Ambode’s wife, Bolanle, said the society should not pretend that all was well, considering the unwholesome attitude of many youths who were drug addicts.

She added that the responsibility of taking away youths from drug abuse should not be left for the government alone.

Also, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Agboola Dabiri, said statistics showed that abuse of drugs among youths was increasing.
