Abiodun warns transporters: No unjust fare hikes as Ogun rolls out 100 CNG buses

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has cautioned transporters against exploiting the public in response to the recent fuel price hike.

He announced the release of 100 brand-new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to mitigate the impact on transport costs.

During a meeting at his office in Abeokuta with transport unions, the Governor emphasized that transport fares should not be disproportionately increased due to the rise in fuel prices.

He also revealed that the Federal Government will provide 20 CNG buses and 500 conversion kits to Ogun State, with buses set to arrive within the week.

Abiodun stressed that past fuel price adjustments have led to an unreasonable rise in transportation costs, which must be curbed.

He added that transport fare increases should align with the 25-30% fuel price hike, not exceed it.

To enforce this, the Governor set up a committee involving the State Police Commissioner, DSS, TRACE, transport unions, and government officials. The committee will ensure fair pricing and address any misconduct.

In addition to the CNG buses, Ogun State is a major conversion centre for CNG vehicles in the Southwest, and the conversion of vehicles will begin soon with the 500 kits provided.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, urged transporters to keep fuel price increases in perspective, while the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, called for a reasonable fare structure.

Speaking for the transport unions, ACOMORAN National President, Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, praised the Governor for his efforts in revolutionizing the transport sector and pledged to work on a more affordable fare regime for the people.
