President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently in a meeting with the president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Omar Touray and Nigeria’s former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar.

The meeting which is reportedly being held over the political instability in the Republic of Niger and how to resolve the crisis has the national security adviser (NSA) to president Tinubu, Nuhu Ribadu in attendance.

On Saturday, Nigeria’s former ruler, Abubakar, led a delegation of ECOWAS to Niger in a last-ditch diplomatic effort to reach a peaceful resolution with the junta.

The delegation met with the ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum after meeting Tchiani but no truce has been reached yet.

ECOWAS through its Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musa, disclosed on Sunday that it won’t accept the Republic of Niger junta’s three-year power transition plan.

Abdel-Fatau Musa, during an interview with the BBC, described Tchiani’s proposal as a smokescreen for dialogue and diplomacy.

On Tuesday, the African Union (AU) said it had suspended Niger until civilian rule in the country is restored.

AU also said in a statement that it would assess the implications of any armed intervention in the troubled Sahel nation.
