Guardiola insists Premier League is top priority for City

Guardiola also said he doesn’t need to tell his players to focus on their clash against Everton because they know it’s crucial

Man City boss, Pep Guardiola, has insisted that his treble-chasing side are not prioritising winning the UEFA Champions League (UCL) over the Premier League this season, saying the league title is a top priority.

The Spanish tactician also said he doesn’t see the need to tell his players to focus on their clash with Everton on Sunday, because of the distractions of their Champions League semi-final second leg with Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Citizens held the European champions to a draw at Bernabeu during midweek and must stash away their continental ambition until after they face Everton at Goodison Park for three crucial points in the Premier League title race.

While Man City have won the league four times in the last five seasons and are on the verge of adding a fifth in six seasons this campaign, they have never lifted the Champions League trophy.

Speaking ahead of the Everton game

Guardiola said: “The players are so humble and respectful to the opponents, they know exactly how difficult is Everton, they live it and know it before,”.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m convinced they will be incredibly focussed at Goodison Park. The Premier League is so important title. I know the highlights of the Champions League are so special, but [the Premier League is] many months, many tough games, and incredible effort. The effort for the mindset in the right place where you have to be.”
