Senate passes electricity bill

Nigeria has for years been bedeviled by poor power generation, transmission and distribution, a situation which successive governments have not been able to change.

But Senator Gabriel Suswam , chairman of the senate  committee on power ,in his presentation on the floor of the senate said the bill’s objective  is to amongst others, provide an Ideal legal and institutional framework to leverage the modest gains of the privatisation phase of the electric power sector in Nigeria.

He said the bill  would “reinvigorate the Institutional framework for the reform of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry initiated and implemented by the Federal Government.”

He also said the provisions of the bill include promoting policies and regulatory measures that would ensure the expansion of power transmission networks in Nigeria in order to address any imbalance in the existing transmission infrastructure.
