Judge Juan Merchan has sentenced President-elect Donald Trump, to an unconditional discharge in the high-profile hush money case, sparing him jail time, penalties, or probation.
Judge Merchan justified the decision, stating, “The only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgment or conviction without encroaching upon the highest office of the land is an unconditional discharge.”
In an unexpected and poignant conclusion, Merchan addressed Trump directly: “Sir, I wish you godspeed as you assume your second term in office.”
Despite the courtroom’s tension, Trump remained stoic, offering no immediate reaction. However, outside the confines of the court, his response was fiery and defiant.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump unleashed a scathing critique of the proceedings, branding the case “another pathetic, un-American Witch Hunt” orchestrated by “Radical Democrats.”
“There was never a case,” he declared emphatically.“The real Jury, the American People, have spoken, by re-electing me with an overwhelming MANDATE in one of the most consequential Elections in History,” he said.
Trump’s statement also targeted the legal process, describing it as a “despicable charade” and promising a vigorous appeal to “restore the trust of Americans in our once-great System of Justice.”
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was subdued but intense. CNN reporter Kara Scannell, who observed the proceedings, noted that this trial differed from others due to the rare opportunity for the public to hear directly from Judge Merchan.
Throughout the trial, Merchan maintained an “even keel” despite Trump’s repeated attacks, which included inflammatory statements about the judge and his family.
Today’s sentencing marked a culmination of that judicial composure, as Merchan directly addressed Trump via a screen, his tone measured yet firm.
“The legal protections of the presidency do not reduce the seriousness of the crime or justify its commission in any way,” Merchan said. “One power they do not provide is the power to erase a jury verdict.”
